Type IV PFD
Type IV PFD devices are those designed to be thrown to a person in the water. These throwable types include ring buoys, horseshoe buoys, boat cushions, and so on.
They are not meant to be worn, and must be supplemented with a wearable PFD. These must be immediately available for emergencies.
These are not recommended for use with unconscious or exhausted people, non-swimmers, and small children. They are not suitable for rough or cold water survival.
Practice throwing these devices before an emergency arises. An underhand throw or sideways toss works best.
