Fixed Ladders - Fall Arrest Systems

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28 addresses personal fall arrest systems for fixed ladders. Over the next 20 years, OSHA is phasing in a requirement to equip fixed ladders that extend over 24 feet with ladder safety systems or personal fall arrest systems, and will prohibit the use of cages and wells as a means of fall protection. The Final Rule grandfathers in cages and wells on existing ladders. However, the Final Rule requires, during the phase-in period, that employers equip new ladders, replacement ladders, and ladder sections with ladder safety systems or personal fall arrest systems.
