Scaffolding

In a Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) study, 72 percent of workers injured in scaffold accidents attributed the accident either to the planking or support giving way, or to the employee slipping or being struck by a falling object. Scaffolds, or staging, are devices used to provide an elevated working surface.

Before working on or near any scaffold, workers should ensure that scaffolds are:

  • Safely secured and supported
  • Level
  • Provided with safe access (such as ladders)
  • Adequately decked (for example, with a work surface and platform)
  • Provided with guard rails
