Common Hazardous Mists
Lubricants
Ships contain a massive amount of complex machinery that needs to be running smoothly for sometimes weeks at a time. Workers use lubricants such as grease or oil to reduce the amount of friction between the moving parts. Application of lubricants can release a mist that is harmful to inhale.
Paints and Coatings
Paints and coatings used in the maritime industry can contain toxic solvents like benzol, acetone, and amyl acetate. When using paint and rust removers that contain strong acids or alkalis, employees must be protected by suitable face shields to prevent chemical burns on the face or neck.
1,2-dibromo-3-chlorpropane
The chemical 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) is a dense yellow or amber liquid with a pungent odor at high concentrations. Symptoms of exposure include irritation of the eyes, skin, and nose; drowsiness; nausea; vomiting; pulmonary edema; liver and kidney injury; and sterility. DBCP is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of organic chemicals.
