Special Considerations
Shipyard work is traditionally hazardous, with an injury-accident rate more than twice that of construction and general industry. The maritime industry poses some unique challenges for health and safety for employees working with chemical and toxic substances. These challenges include the following:
- As a ship is constructed, confined and enclosed spaces are created, making workers more susceptible to exposure to hazardous substances. Enclosed spaces make escape into open air far more difficult.
- Ships contain many paints, coatings, and preservatives, and these surfaces are often heated. Combined with enclosed spaces, this creates more hazards for workers.
- Conditions are often slippery near the water, creating more opportunity for injury.
- For those working aboard vessels, movement can pose a serious problem when working with hazardous substances.
To address these challenges, workers should consider the following best practices:
- Anticipate hazards and always test the atmosphere before entering a confined space.
- Always be aware of chemical hazards and wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Be aware of your surroundings and be sure to have slip-resistant footwear. Good housekeeping practices can help prevent falls and injury.
- Communicate with your employer or supervisor so you can understand the risks of your working environment.
