Employer Duties - MACOSH Guidelines

According to MACOSH, the following elements are essential to ensure an effective workplace safety and health program:

  • Employee participation
  • Hazard identification, assessment, and control
  • Accident and incident investigation
  • Training
  • Program recordkeeping and evaluation

Of greatest importance in creating and maintaining an effective safety and health program is management commitment. Only the employer can emphasize, uphold, and commit to actions that promote worker safety. To demonstrate leadership in this regard, employers should create a clear workplace policy regarding the prevention and control of workplace hazards. This policy needs to clearly assign roles and responsibilities, provide authority and adequate resources for health and safety program development, and provide for regular communication with employees. In the following sections, we will discuss elements of safety and health programs as they pertain to maritime hot work.
