Introduction to Maritime Hot Work
The maritime worksite presents many hazards and is considered one of the more dangerous work environments. Data about shipyard accidents, for example, shows that shipyard employees have three times the likelihood being injured on the job than employees in a manufacturing setting. Work performed in shipyards and maritime terminals often involves the fabrication or repair of large steel beams, plates, and pipes. Riveting, welding, cutting, and brazing - activities referred to as "hot work" - are all typical methods of performing this work. Because of the risks of fire, explosion, toxic atmospheres, light radiation, and heat, hot work activities are dangerous in any environment. They are especially dangerous in maritime environments. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 25 percent of shipyard fatalities occur because of fires and explosions caused by hot work activities.
