Shipyard employment - The activities of ship repairing, shipbuilding, shipbreaking, and related employments, including alterations, conversions, installations, cleaning, painting, and maintenance work.

Shipyard employer - An employer whose employees are active in shipyard employment on the navigable waters of the United States, including dry docks, graving docks, and marine railways.

Hazard - Any condition or situation that may present a risk of danger.

Hot work - Riveting, welding, burning, or other fire- or spark-producing operations.

Safe for hot work - A space or area that has been designated as suitable for hot work, based on inspection and specific guidelines.

Confined space - Any compartment of small size and limited access that, because of its limitations, can create or worsen a hazardous exposure.

Adjacent space - Any space or area that is next to a space or area in which hot work is taking place.
