Personal Protective Equipment

Requirements regarding PPE use in shipyards are found in 29 CFR 1915, Subpart I. 29 CFR 1917 also lists a number of PPE standards at section 1917.152. The hazard assessment process is required to determine key hazards that must be addressed. Employers must ensure that all workers present in the area where hot work is being performed are appropriately protected from the hazards they may encounter. It is important to note that any employee exposed to radiation must have his or her skin covered completely in order to prevent ultraviolet burns. To this end, helmets and hand coverings must not have leaks, openings, or highly reflective surfaces.
