Section 1917
Another important set of OSHA standards, 29 CFR 1917, Marine Terminals, applies within marine terminals, such as wharves, bulkheads, quays, piers, docks, and other berthing locations, and adjacent storage or adjacent areas. It covers structures associated with the primary movement of cargo or materials between a vessel and the shore.
The marine terminals standards pertain to structures that are devoted to receiving, handling, holding, consolidating, and loading or delivery of waterborne shipments or passengers. This includes areas devoted to the maintenance of the terminal or equipment.
The 29 CFR 1917 standards do not include production or manufacturing areas, or storage facilities directly associated with those areas.
29 CFR 1917 Marine Terminals covers a range of subjects related to employee safety in the specified work environments. In this course, we will focus on section 1917.152, Welding, cutting and heating (hot work). Many of the rules found there are similar to those in 29 CFR 1915.
