Types of Hot Work

Welding - A process in which materials (usually metals or thermoplastics) are joined by using either heat or pressure, or a combination of both; the most common types are gas, arc, resistance, energy beam, and solid-state welding.

Gas welding - A type of welding that uses fuel gases and oxygen to weld metals; the presence of pure oxygen raises the flame temperature to allow melting of metals.

Arc welding - A type of welding that uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc to melt the metals at the welding point.

Brazing - A process in which two or more metals are fused by melting and flowing a filler metal at the joint.

Cutting - A process to cut a metal object with flame, plasma, or lasers; as with welding, high levels of heat are generated throughout this process.

Grinding - A subset of cutting, a process that uses a grinding wheel to cut or smooth metallic surfaces.
