Low-Vibration Tools and Tool Balancers
Low-Vibration Tools
Low-vibration tools are specifically designed to reduce the vibration transmitted by the tool to the hands. Many low-vibration tools, such as grinders, sanders, and impact wrenches, are commercially available.
To further reduce the effects of vibration, perform tool maintenance on a regular basis. Oiling and cleaning tools daily increases the life of the tool and reduces vibration. Out-of-balance or off-center grinding wheels, pads, and spindles are major contributors to vibration. To further reduce the negative effects of vibration, workers should learn to grip tools as lightly as possible while still maintaining control.
Tool Balancers
Tool balancers are portable devices that support and position tools. Tool balancers may be used to reduce the weight held and the forces associated with using heavy tools and can help workers reduce the hand and shoulder muscle fatigue caused by holding a tool for prolonged time. In some cases they can also help reduce exposure to tool vibration.
Spring-loaded, pneumatic, electric, and computer-controlled tool balancers are widely available, and various adaptors are available for different tool configurations. Tool balancers require regular adjustment and maintenance. Also, the tool balancer should be rated for the load weight.
