Shipside
Several ergonomics improvements suggested by OSHA are best implemented in the docking area of the shipyard. These improvements include dry-dock centering devices, lighter-weight blowers, stools and creepers, gas line connector racks, davit cranes, and block lifting devices.
Dry Dock Centering Devices
A mechanized reel system, called a dry dock centering device, pulls ships into position in dry dock. This system reduces the extreme pulling forces normally required for workers to manually pull a vessel into dry dock. When using these devices, be sure to check the centering device lines frequently and replace damaged ones to maintain effectiveness.
Lighter-Weight Blowers
Lighter-weight blowers can be used to move air in small spaces and require less lift force to carry onto vessels. These blowers have handles, and their weight is more balanced for easy carrying. When using lighter-weight blowers, always make sure that you have adequate air volume in any confined space.
Stools and Creepers
Stools and creepers provide needed support that allows employees to stay in safer seated or reclining body positions while working on hard-to-reach areas, such as underneath ships, decks, or platforms, or when working below waist level. Tools, equipment, and materials can be attached to the stools or creepers for convenience.
Locking the casters helps prevent the stools and creepers from moving unexpectedly. Adjustable stools and creepers are preferred, and some stools can be custom-made.
Gas Line Connector Racks
Gas line connector racks allow workers to connect gas lines transporting oxygen, acetylene and other flammable gases to one central location, thereby reducing the number of gas tanks that workers must handle. Gas racks are assembled by the vendor, and a rack can be moved by crane as a single unit.
Davit Cranes
Davit cranes are devices mounted to dry docks to move heavy items onto or off of vessels, effectively reducing the need for manual lifting and handling. Many types, sizes, and capacities of davit cranes are available to lift and transport heavy items. Always ensure that the davit crane is rated for the load weight.
Block Lifting Devices
Block lifting devices are hook-like devices that allow wood blocks to be lifted by a crane or forklift. These devices reduce the need for the manual lifting, moving, and positioning of very heavy wood blocks.
