LSSC Responsibilities

If necessary, management or the LSO of organizations with multiple divisions or locations should appoint an LSSC to oversee all operational aspects of laser safety at each site where lasers are being used. The duties of the LSSC may include:

  • Overseeing laser activities in an identified use area
  • Working as a liaison between the clinical staff and the LSO regarding questions or concerns
  • Troubleshooting equipment
  • Monitoring compliance with operational policies and procedures
  • Maintaining unit inventory
  • Assisting users and staff as needed during laser use
  • Assisting the LSO with auditing, assessing training needs, and monitoring credentialing and certification status

In smaller, non-hospital health care facilities, such as dental and veterinary offices, a DLSO and LSSC may not be needed as long as the LSO is readily available on a day-to-day basis.
