Non-Physician Training
Any licensed medical professional who is employed by a physician to perform a procedure must receive appropriate, documented training in the safe and effective use of each system. Before using health care laser systems, non-physicians should:
- Receive training in laser physics, laser-tissue interaction, laser safety, clinical application, and pre- and post-operative care.
- Read and sign their facility's policies and procedures regarding the safe use of lasers.
- Participate in continuing education programs in compliance with state or facility regulations.
- Participate in a minimum of 10 training procedures for each laser procedure and laser type.
After completing the appropriate training course and demonstrating competency, licensed non-physicians may perform limited laser treatments on specific patients as directed by a supervising physician. Note that non-physicians using medical lasers must carry adequate malpractice insurance.
