Safety Programs

Health care facilities are required to establish and maintain safety programs for the control of laser hazards. These programs must include:

  • Delegation of authority and responsibility for the supervision of evaluation and control of hazards to the LSO and, if assigned, the DLSO and LSSC
  • A multidisciplinary Laser Safety Committee if warranted by a diversity of laser usage, such as in large health care facilities
  • Criteria and authorization procedures for all health care personnel entering or working within the nominal hazard zone
  • Implementation and monitoring of protective control measures
  • Management and reporting of accidents as well as action plans to prevent recurrence of accidents
  • Education and training of authorized personnel in the assessment and control of laser hazards
  • Safety audits
