Training

As part of an adequate laser safety program, the following personnel are required to undergo training:

• LSO, DLSO, LSSC
• Laser users
• Laser operators
• Technical support staff
• Nurses and allied health personnel (workers trained and licensed to assist health professionals)

Safety training programs must provide these personnel with a thorough understanding of all procedures required for establishing and maintaining a safe environment during the use of laser systems. Training programs should be specific to the laser systems in use, the procedures to be performed, and in accordance with all federal, state, and facility policies. Retraining should be provided at intervals determined by the LSO, but they must be provided at least every five years for laser users, operators, LSOs, DLSOs, and LSSCs.
