Access & Egress
Access and egress are terms used interchangeably with entry and exit, respectively. When planning for viable means of entry and exit, employers should keep several considerations in mind. First, employers should ensure that all entry and exit points are in accordance with the plan in place for the work being performed. Entering and exiting the space should not require modifying the plan or adjusting certain aspects of the confined space setup. Second, all entry and exit points should be safe, such as by securing a ladder or steps in place near the entryway. The dangers of slips, trips, and falls in a confined space are magnified because of the close proximity of surfaces and equipment within the area.
Another important consideration is the size of the opening. The average size worker should be able to enter and exit comfortably through any openings in the confined space. The Ministry of Labour recommends that any point of entry be at least 24 inches in diameter to allow easy movement. In any case where the opening must be smaller, employers must make other modifications to the plan, including updating the rescue procedures in the event of an emergency. When determining the size of the entry point, it is important to consider what equipment or protective clothing the workers will be bringing into the confined space. For example, if a worker must wear a harness while working in the confined space, the access opening should be free of snag points, thereby ensuring smooth movement into and out of the confined space. Finally, workers should be able to lock any doors, hatches, or other means of enclosure in an open position while work is being performed, thereby lowering the risk of entrapment within the confined space.
