Atmospheric Hazards
Atmospheric testing is the very first item that should be completed when preparing a confined space. A competent person should perform air quality testing in order to identify any dangerous atmospheric conditions before anyone enters the space or begins work. Oxygen levels must be within a safe range so that workers can breathe comfortably. If the oxygen levels are outside the recommended range, workers may lose consciousness or even suffocate. Asphyxiants such as argon, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide can cause oxygen displacement, leading to loss of consciousness, coma, or death. If a worker's bare skin comes into contact with dangerous chemicals in the air, or if an employee inhales a harmful vapor or gas, they may be seriously injured. If the air quality tester discovers these conditions while performing tests, they must correct the situation before work can begin. Air quality can be improved through ventilation, purging, or inerting.
