Difference Between Restricted & Confined Space

Entering & Exiting

Having a viable means of entering and exiting confined spaces is vital to maintaining safety. The OHS Confined Spaces Regulation, 632/05, states, "An adequate means for entering and exiting shall be provided for all workers who enter a confined space, in accordance with the relevant plan." A space that is too difficult to get out of may keep a worker in harm's way during an emergency, and complicated means of access can introduce new hazards to workers as they are moving in and out of the space. The Ontario Ministry of Labour defines entry as "the action by which a person passes through an opening into a confined space." By this definition, entry occurs at the moment where any part of the worker's body has entered the confined space.
