Inspection & Maintenance - Batteries

OHS Regulation, Section 12 requires that forklifts be maintained in a condition that will not compromise the health and safety of workers, but will safely perform the functions for which they are intended. Often a company will hire an outside technician for large maintenance tasks. However, there are some standard tasks that can be completed by other competent persons.

For example, electric motor style lift trucks are powered by batteries. These batteries need to be charged and maintained to ensure smooth operation. When charging a battery, be sure to turn the charger off and unplug it before attaching or removing clamp connections. When attaching the clamps to the battery, attach the red clamp to positive and the black clamp to negative in that order.

When performing a standard check on the battery, look for any loose connections, frayed cables, corrosion, or cracks. Always replace worn or unserviceable parts before using the lift truck. Ensure that connections are secure, but do not overly tighten. NEVER touch a battery that displays corrosion. Corrosion can be removed with a cloth containing a solution of water and baking soda. When moving or changing a battery, always grasp the battery at opposite corners.
