Inspection & Maintenance - Competence of Maintenance Technicians

As with lift truck operators and trainers, any company wishing to employ a maintenance technician should first ensure that technician's competence. In addition to the requirements listed below, a maintenance technician should be familiar with the various types of lift trucks and their functions. Be sure to make clear to the technician the intended use of the truck if it differs from standard use. The following are minimum qualifications for a competent lift truck technician, as stated by the Ontario Ministry of Labour:

• Knowledge of personal safety practices necessary to perform routine and periodic inspections of powered lift trucks in current use
• Familiarity with industry terminology and the terms used
• Ability to read and understand lift truck manuals, manufacturer's specifications, drawings, and parts lists
• Knowledge of the purpose and function of all components, devices, and accessories commonly employed on powered lift trucks, and how to carry out an effective inspection
• Working knowledge of electrical, electronic control, and hydraulic principles
• Working knowledge of mechanical principles and the effects of traction
• Where applicable, working knowledge of pneumatic principles

It is important to note that these qualifications are usually achieved through five years' experience in field service work.
