Inspection & Maintenance - Fuel Tanks
While electric motor type lift trucks run on batteries, ICE lift trucks are powered by propane. When working with fuel tanks, always wear eye protection and gloves. Do not use metal tools. The following steps outline the process for changing a propane cylinder on a lift truck:
- Close the cylinder valve.
- Run the engine until it stops to ensure that the propane supply hose is empty before beginning work.
- Shut off the engine.
- Open the connecting nut.
- Disconnect the hose and holding straps.
- Remove the empty cylinder and replace it with a full cylinder in the proper position.
- Reconnect the holding straps and hose.
- Tighten the connecting nut. Be sure to check the connection's security by gently wiggling the hose.
- Slowly open the valve on the cylinder and check for leaks.
- If no leaks are found, start the motor and continue operation. If leaks are present, attempt to repeat the installation procedure. If leaks persist, seek outside help from a qualified and competent maintenance technician.
