Inspection & Maintenance - Recommended Inspection Points

Before beginning work with a lift truck, it is necessary to perform a pre-operational check to ensure that all parts are working properly. This check must be done at least once a day. Failing to perform this check could result in serious injury due to faulty equipment.

  • The forklift appears clean and in good condition.
  • The manufacturer's load capacity and ratings are clearly displayed.
  • The lift chains are in good condition and have no broken parts or excessive wear.
  • The forks are undamaged (look for cracks, scrapes, loose parts, and other signs of damage).
  • The bolts on the overhead guard, back rest, and tilt cylinders are tight and secure.
  • The hydraulic hoses are in good condition.
  • The tires are adequately inflated (if pneumatic) and have no cracks or other signs of wear.
  • The lights and horn are working properly.
  • The parking brake is effective and in good condition.
  • The operator seat is in good condition and the seat belt is working properly.
  • There are no signs of leaks (oil, coolant, fuel, and other pertinent fluids).
  • The fluids (brake fluid, engine oil, hydraulic tank, and coolant) are at appropriate levels.
  • When the engine is started, the dashboard gauges give proper, accurate readings.
  • The steering wheel is responsive and in good condition.
  • The mast and forks raise, lower, and tilt smoothly.
  • The clutch engages properly and shifts smoothly.
  • The brake pedal is working properly.
  • The battery is charged, well-connected, and in good condition (if electric motor style lift truck).
