Other Workers' Safety - Pedestrians
At most work sites, lift truck operators are not the only workers present. There are usually pedestrians moving around the site and personnel carrying out other tasks. When possible, facility design should include separate walkways for pedestrians out of the path of a forklift. As far as reasonably practicable, walkways should be completely separate from the forklift work area. However, if workers must walk through a forklift work area, walkways should be out of the path of the forklift and marked by barriers or brightly colored paint or tape. Pedestrians should wear clothing that is highly visible and can be seen by a lift truck operator. In the event that workers must cross the path of a forklift, no part of a load should ever pass over a worker due to the risk of injury or death from falling material. Remember, the lift truck operator is responsible for the safety of nearby workers.
