Posting Signage

One of the easiest and most effective ways to remind workers of hazards is to post signage. Signs can be used to indicate specific areas where the risk of an accident is high. Signs can also be used to give specifications about equipment use and capacity. Every lift truck should clearly display information on the maximum load capacity, as well as the variations on capacity depending on the reach of the equipment. If a truck has been modified, the signage must indicate the new load ratings. OHS regulation (Section 283) requires that forklifts also have a hard copy of this information on hand for the lift truck operator.

In addition to load capacity signs on lift trucks, employers and site managers should post signs around the work site that indicate where lift trucks operate. Traffic signs can be utilized to remind lift truck operators of where they should stop to look for pedestrians, as well as where they should proceed slowly or with caution due to other machinery, employees, and work being carried out.
