Reasonably Practicable
The term reasonably practicable describes a situation in which recommendations and standards can realistically be followed and implemented. Reasonably practicable describes the optimal method for completing a task, which is sometimes unavailable in a given work environment. If a recommendation is not reasonably practicable in the work environment, the employer must specify and implement other safe practices in order to ensure the safety of all workers while performing required tasks. For example, a regulation may require that, where reasonably practicable, forklift operators should travel with a load lowered in order to maintain a clear view. However, when traveling up an incline, the load may have to be raised slightly in order to avoid contact with the sloped ground. In this situation, the forklift operator must raise the load slightly in order to avoid contact with the sloped ground without obstructing his or her view of the route.
