Safe Operating Procedures - Elevating a Load
Elevating and handling a load is one of the most hazardous aspects of operating a lift truck. When loads are not handled properly, workers are put at risk for injuries from falling materials, among other dangers. Follow these tips to keep yourself and other workers safe while elevating a load:
- NEVER attempt to elevate a load unless the lift truck is fully stopped and the emergency brake is applied.
- Ensure that the forks are level, high enough to enter the pallet or lift the load without dragging along any surface, and as widely spread as possible to increase the stability of the load.
- Inspect the load to ensure it is stable and adequately supported before attempting to lift.
- Before lifting the load, double check that the forks are all the way under the load, but not jutting out past the edge, as this could cause other materials to fall if contacted by the lift.
- Lift the load straight up (about 10-20 cm from the floor), then tilt back slightly before moving.
- Ensure there will be no contact between the load and any other materials.
- Never touch a load or attempt to adjust it by hand while it is on the lift. This could cause an unsafe shift in the materials and cause the load to fall.
