Stand-up & Sit-down Lifts
Most classes of lift trucks provide the choice of a stand-up lift or a sit-down lift. Although the load ratings are usually similar, there are pros and cons to consider when choosing the right style for a task. Stand-up lift trucks are typically smaller than sit-down trucks since they do not have to account for as much horizontal space for the operator. This allows high-volume warehouses to decrease the size of their aisles, thereby creating more space for product storage. However, in most stand-up lifts there is no enclosed operator compartment. In other words, the operator is standing in the open with no protection from cross beams, protruding inventory, or falling objects. While sit-down lift trucks do take up more space, they usually provide additional protection in the operator compartment. With an overhead barrier and a grill surrounding the compartment, the operator is shielded from falling items. In the event of a turnover, an operator in an adequately constructed compartment is also prevented from being thrown out of the cab and into the path of falling objects or the lift itself. As always, conduct a thorough assessment before deciding which type of lift truck is appropriate.
