Statistics
The main goal of the OHS regulations is to safeguard the work environment against the hazards that occur in confined spaces. Note the following statistics:
- Every year, millions of workers enter confined spaces as part of their job.
- About 60 percent of deaths in confined spaces result from oxygen deficiency and lack of air quality testing.
- An estimated 60 percent of the fatalities related to confined spaces have been among the would-be rescuers.
- Over a 15-year period, 18 deaths occurred in confined spaces in British Columbia. That is more than one a year. Some estimates indicate more than a hundred such deaths take place across Canada each year.
