Authorized Individuals
Employers must provide training that assists all authorized individuals in understanding the purpose and function of lockout/tagout and a hazardous control program. This training should be specific to the level of hazard exposure an employee may possibly encounter.
Authorized employee training programs must adhere to the following standards:
- Individual training must be completed prior to an authorized individual performing service and maintenance tasks or being potentially exposed to hazardous energy.
- Training must be specific to the employer's documented hazardous energy control program.
- The training program must be developed using relevant manufacturer's documentation, industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and feedback from authorized individuals.
- Each authorized individual must receive training specific to the type and magnitude of the energy available in the workplace.
Authorized individuals must also receive training related to the types of energy they may encounter during common service or maintenance procedures and methods of control, isolation, and verification for each type.
Training should include samples of machine-specific procedures, and individuals should be allowed to review and implement site-specific lockout/tagout procedures outlined in a hazardous energy control program.
CSA standards dictate that the employer is responsible for documenting that all initial and additional training has been completed. The documentation must include the employee's name, date(s) of training, and the training topic(s) covered by that session. Documentation of the information covered during the training sessions should be maintained for future reference.
