Common Hazards & Risk Reduction

The most common threat to those performing energy isolation duties is a lack of familiarity with their site-specific, task-specific procedures for lockout/tagout. Failing to verify that lockout/tagout has successfully isolated a machine, equipment, or process may result in many hazards including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Electrical arc
  • Projection of molten particles
  • Being run over, crushed, or entangled with moving parts
  • Burns
  • Hearing loss

To reduce risks, warning signs, placards, and tags may be used to warn personnel of hazardous conditions.
