Hazard & Risk Analysis
Using the information gathered in the first two steps, you can begin to analyze the hazards and potential risks associated with an employee's daily tasks. This analysis should compile a comprehensive list of possible hazards and the risks associated with each hazard.
This course focuses on hazardous energy and lockout methods, but your list should include hazards such as user error or equipment malfunction. Once you have a comprehensive list of the tasks and risks associated with each employee's daily routine, risks should be ranked by likelihood of resulting in an accident. The four terms below can be used to rank potential accidents:
- Probable - Likely to occur
- Possible - Could occur (but not probable)
- Unlikely - Unlikely to occur
- Negligible - Occurrence so remote it can be considered zero
Ranking accident probability is helpful to determine areas of a job that may need more training and documentation due to being high risk. It can also identify parts of the process where methods of risk reduction are most important. Common methods of risk reduction include easy-to-follow instruction manuals, warning labels, guards, barriers, and direct supervision.
