Information Gathering
This is the first, and possibly the most important, step in developing a hazardous energy control program.
Begin by gathering all relevant documentation, starting with the manufacturer or designer of a device or system of devices, such as:
- Where energy-isolating devices used for lockout/tagout are located and the proper procedures for use
- Detailed steps for servicing or maintaining the device or system of devices
- Information concerning how to safely address common issues or malfunctions resulting in a planned or unplanned interruption in operations
- Information related to safely installing, moving, or removing any component of the device or system of devices
Compiling the above information allows you to understand the intended use of the device or system of devices and will provide you with direction for formulating site-specific safety protocol.
