Maintenance & Service Operations

The first five steps of the process are in place to ensure that employees safely arrive at this step. The activity that predetermined the need for hazardous energy control should be completed according to procedures that must be outlined in the same way that lockout/tagout procedures are outlined.

Sometimes, a device must be tested or repositioned while lockout procedures are implemented requiring full or partial re-energizing of the system. If this happens, the following procedure should be observed:

  • All personnel must be notified of the intent to fully or partially re-energize the device or system.
  • Before re-energizing, the device or system must be fully inspected to ensure a safe return to an energized state.
  • All personnel must demonstrate understanding that they must stand clear of the machine, equipment, or process.
  • Once all affected personnel have been properly notified and all necessary lockout/tagout devices have been removed, the machine, equipment, or process may be fully or partially re-energized.
  • When the energy is no longer needed, lockout must be reapplied in accordance with the standard procedure for your workplace.
