Lockout & PPE
An effective hazardous energy control plan should make use of the various forms of PPE for the protection of employees. Implementing the use of PPE can reduce an employee's exposure to risk while performing maintenance and service on locked out machinery or equipment.
When a risk assessment indicates that PPE use would be beneficial or if engineered standards, warning and alerting techniques, safe work procedures and best practices, or combinations thereof do not provide an effective level of protection, authorized individuals must be protected from injury by the use of PPE.
Common examples of PPE include protective eyewear and faceshields, protective footwear, protective gloves, hearing protection, and protective headgear, such as a helmet.
