Preparation

The first step in any lockout/tagout system is to prepare for the shutdown or isolation of a device or system of devices. An authorized person must identify the sources of all energy present and in need of control.

The method(s) of control should have been outlined in previous documentation or training. If the method of control has not been previously outlined, it must be documented before moving on to the next step. In short, the exact method for locking and tagging out a machine must be developed before performing any activity related to isolating or de-energizing.
