Specialized Tools & Devices for Lockout

The process of locking out a device typically involves specially designed tools as well as different forms of PPE. All protective materials and hardware required to perform hazardous energy control must be provided by the employer.

All lockout devices and any accompanying tags must feature the following characteristics:

  • Uniquely identified
  • The only devices used for controlling hazardous energy
  • Used only in the manner indicated by documentation
  • Capable of withstanding the environment in which they are used
  • Standardized within the facility in at least one of the following criteria:
    • Colour
    • Shape
    • Size
    • Specific markings
  • Substantial enough to prevent operation of the energy-isolating device without excessive force, unusual measures, or destructive techniques, such as bolt cutters.

An information tag must be attached to all lockout devices unless the lockout device comes with an information tag already attached. Each lockout device and tag, if used, must identify the authorized individual responsible for applying and removing the device. The date and reason for the lockout may be included on the tag as well. The information on the tag must remain legible for the maximum period of time that the device is expected to be in use.

Locks and tags should contain some form of hazardous conditions warning. Common phrasing used on tags is "Danger" as well as "Do Not Start," "Do Not Open," "Do Not Close," "Do Not Energize," or "Do Not Operate."

Some provinces require specific tags for certain lockout applications. Check with your local occupational health and safety regulatory agency to ensure compliance.
