Lockout/Tagout System Steps

Lockout/tagout is just one part of a hazardous energy control program, though it is perhaps the most important.

According to the CSA standard Z460-13, lockout/tagout is defined as the "placement of a lock or tag on an energy-isolating device in accordance with an established procedure, indicating that the energy-isolating device is not to be operated until removal of the lock or tag in accordance with an established procedure."

Establishing a lockout/tagout procedure and its accompanying documentation is the sole responsibility of the employer. These steps should be specific to the worksite and clearly communicated to all present and future employees. Now, we will review the general steps associated with a lockout/tagout system.
