Verification

The next step is to verify the system has been securely locked out. There are several ways to verify the isolation of a device or system of devices.

The most obvious means of verifying lockout is to engage the buttons and switches on a device and observe the results. If there is no result, the lockout is verified. Return any buttons and switches to the OFF position before proceeding with service or maintenance procedures.

You may also verify lockout by visually ensuring the following:

  • All electrical connections are open
  • Suspended parts are blocked against movement or lowered to a resting position
  • Other devices that restrict machine movement are properly implemented
  • Any other acceptable method of energy isolation is properly implemented
  • If applicable, confirm hydraulic and pneumatic potential energy has been released by checking the device's pressure gauges
  • If applicable, confirm all thermal energy has been released by checking the device's temperature gauges

For pipes and ducts, check the valve positioning for double block and bleed. Close two valves in a section of a line, and then bleed or vent the section of line between the two closed valves. Ensure that all pipes, ducts, or lines have been closed off with a solid plate (a process known as blanking or blinding).

Lockout verification may also be confirmed by testing the device's circuitry. This step must be completed by a qualified electrician. Ensure equipment containing capacitors has been cycled to drain off any residual stored energy.
