Backfilling
Modern mine reclamation serves the purpose of minimizing and mitigating the effects of mining. Backfill is the material used to refill an excavation, and the act of backfilling occurs in open pit mines as a part of the rehabilitation process. When mine operators are planning their backfilling operations, they must keep the following considerations in mind:
- Removal and disposal of contaminated materials (for example, spilled fuel oil, asphalt, and solid waste) at an approved facility prior to backfilling
- The material to be used for backfill (construction and demolition debris must not be used as backfill)
- Prevention of subsidence in backfilled material
- Estimation of compaction and settling rates and how they will affect future land use
