Belt Conveyors

Belt conveyors are widely used in surface mining operations to move large quantities of materials through various production processes. They are very powerful machines with many moving parts that can be extremely hazardous to machine operators and other miners. The following are some precautions to take when using belt conveyors:

  • Miners must be properly trained before attempting any work involving belt conveyors.
  • Operators must establish a set of clear, concise rules for using belt conveyors, and post the list in readily visible places near the machinery.
  • Operators must equip belt conveyors with emergency stopping mechanisms.
  • Operators must install conveyor guards around moving parts and nip (pinch) points.
