Dust Control

Because dust cannot be eliminated from a mine, dust control systems are used to reduce dust emissions. A well-designed dust control system can protect workers and often provide the following benefits:

  • Prevent or reduce the risk of dust explosion or fire.
  • Increase visibility and reduce probability of accidents.
  • Prevent unpleasant odors.
  • Reduce cleanup and maintenance costs.
  • Reduce equipment wear.
  • Increase worker morale and productivity.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with existing health regulations.

There are three basic types of dust control systems:

  • Dust collection uses ventilation methods to capture the dust-filled air and carry it away from the source through ductwork.
  • Wet dust suppression techniques use water sprays to wet the material so that it generates less dust.
  • Airborne dust capture systems spray dust particles with atomized water. When the dust particles collide with the water droplets, agglomerates are formed. These agglomerates become too heavy to remain airborne and settle.

30 CFR 74 provides the requirements for using dust samplers in surface coal mines.
