Dust
Dust can be respirable or non-respirable, with respirable dust being more dangerous and both types causing irritation to the nose and eyes.
Respirable dust refers to those dust particles that are small enough to penetrate the nose and upper respiratory system and deep into the lungs. These particles are generally too small to be handled by the body's natural clearance mechanisms, and are therefore more likely to be retained in the body.
Free crystalline silica is the most abundant compound in the earth's crust and is thereby the most common airborne dust that miners face. It can be dispersed by the wind, equipment, or earthmoving machinery.
Excessive dust emissions can cause both health and industrial problems, as follows:
- Health hazards
- Occupational respiratory diseases
- Irritation to eyes, ears, nose, and throat
- Irritation to skin
- Risk of dust explosions and fire
- Damage to equipment
- Impaired visibility
- Unpleasant odors
