Emergency Response Plans

Underground mines are the only mine sites that are required by MSHA to maintain a certified Mine Emergency Response Plan (MERP). However, having a MERP is beneficial for all types of mining.

There are nine steps to follow when creating an emergency response plan:

  1. Establish a planning team
  2. Evaluate current plans, procedures, and incident or drill records
  3. Identify hazards; estimate their probability; and assess their potential impact on people, property, and business
  4. Identify emergency resources
  5. Review codes and regulations
  6. Develop a training program
  7. Develop a communication strategy
  8. Write the plan
  9. Implement the plan
