Extracting

After the overburden has been removed, extraction takes place. Huge machines, such as dragline excavators, are used to extract the minerals from the earth. In surface mining, the material is extracted until the deposit is exhausted or the cost of continuing to mine is uneconomical. The manner in which the material is extracted also depends on the type of material.
