Falls, Slips, & Trips
Falls from heights and slips from unsafe ground conditions can often lead to fatal injuries. Usually, falls and slips are due to an absence of or poorly maintained edge protection. Operators must ensure that walkways and working platforms are properly maintained. In addition, operators should provide sturdy handrails along the open side of platforms and walkways to protect against falls and slips.
The following are some ways operators can reduce the risk of falls, slips, and trips at a mine site:
- Isolate unstable ground until it is fixed.
- Use proper signage to notify others of the danger.
- Frequently examine the stability of pit walls, benches, slopes, or any place where miners travel.
- Properly maintain any walkways and other surfaces where miners travel.
- Equip all paths exceeding an inclination of 50 degrees with stairs or a ladder.
