Fire Control & Prevention

MSHA has carefully outlined requirements for combating fires. These requirements include having the necessary equipment on site. All firefighting equipment must meet the following requirements:

  • Be properly sized
  • Be strategically located
  • Be easily accessible
  • Be properly maintained

In addition to having and maintaining the proper equipment, mine operators must ensure that emergency firefighting and evacuation procedures are in place. Individuals responsible for firefighting in the event of an emergency must participate in fire drills every six months. All surface miners must receive annual instruction on the evacuation plans and procedures and the fire warning signals used in the mine.
