Mine Map

A mine map is a schematic drawing of the mine, drawn according to scale, and showing all important features of the mine. When an emergency condition exists at a mine, it is important for everyone at the mine site to be familiar with the mine map for the site and know the routes of escape from the mine. Although such disasters are rare, knowing how to properly read a mine map can mean the difference between life and death.

The mine map is designed by engineers and is periodically updated to reflect all changes in the mine, such as new development areas, drill holes, and abandoned areas. The mine map must be revised and supplemented at least every six months.

Mine maps must be available to inspectors; miners in the mine and their representatives; operators of adjacent mines; and to anyone who owns, leases, or resides on surface areas of the mine or areas adjacent to the mine.
