Rescue Operations

Specialized rescue teams serve surface mining sites across the nation. Having a certified mine rescue team at-the-ready is only required of underground mines by MSHA, but many teams provide rescue and emergency response services to surface mines as well.

Rescue Stations

Different teams at separate stations will specialize in different emergencies, such as fire suppression or extrication. Surface miners whose work regularly takes them underground may qualify for a rescue team position if they have at least one year of experience at a mine site.

In the event of a mine emergency, operators and workers must contact the nearest rescue station as outlined in the mine's emergency response plan.
